HAUTE COUTURE NEWS

Haute Couture news from Gaultier, Balenciaga and Aleem Yusuf returns to Paris

It is one of Buzz’s favourite weeks of the fashion calendar, with the haute couture shows in full swing in Paris. Even living vicariously from afar this season, it is always a joy to behold what creations and technical marvels designers manage to conjure.

An Australian designer who last July put on his first catwalk show during the week returns for a second outing. Melbourne’s Aleem Yusuf will showcase his spring 2020 collection, dubbed Obsessions. Buzz chatted to him the day before his event, and he aims to continue to show during the week to raise the profile of his couture brand internationally and build a global clientele. “(The collection) is about exploring different layers and textures, of love, individuality and beauty,” he says. “It showcases the traditions of couture — the cut, the drape, the different textures. Almost like a rose that has many layers and which is beautiful and fierce and fragile.”

The collection features layered tulle, French lace and detailed beading and, in an homage to his home of Melbourne, the opening dress is in the city’s favourite hue: black. Yusuf says the fit-and-flare dress is his favourite in the collection but the rest of it includes softer shades of mint and pastel pinks, also red and the traditional finale wedding gown in off-white.

With Paris still in the grip of transport strikes amid the pension reform protests, Yusuf says that mercifully they have been largely unaffected this week, although he concedes “it’s certainly adding to the cab fares”.
